Have you built in Remuera?
Yes. Rawhitiroa is in Remuera, and it took the 2023 National Supreme Renovation of the Year, the top renovation award in the country. It is a 460sqm masonry home reworked around a new 60sqm extension, designed by Neu Architecture.
What makes Remuera homes harder to renovate?
Scale and solidity. Remuera has a lot of large, well-built older houses on established sites, and heavy masonry structures do not come apart the way timber-framed homes do. Rawhitiroa needed steel beams put in where structural walls came out.
Are there heritage restrictions in Remuera?
In parts, yes. The Auckland Unitary Plan applies Special Character Areas and heritage overlays across sections of Remuera, along with pre-1944 demolition controls, so what you can change at the street elevation depends on the specific site rather than the suburb as a whole.
Do the mature trees and tight access cause problems?
They shape the programme more than most people expect. Established trees can carry protection rules, and getting materials and machinery onto a site with a long drive or a narrow entrance affects sequencing and cost. Both get assessed at pricing rather than discovered later.
Do you do extensions in Remuera?
Yes. The 60sqm extension at Rawhitiroa was done as one piece of work with the internal reworking, so the addition and the existing house were resolved together rather than the new part reading as bolted on.
How far is Glenbuild from Remuera?
The office is at 9/55 Sainsbury Road, Mount Albert, a short drive across the central isthmus. Finn is on site through the build rather than visiting occasionally, so the distance matters less than who turns up.
Who will price my Remuera job?
Finn Glengarry, the director, and he is then on site building it. He priced Rawhitiroa and ran it through to the National Supreme, which is the same arrangement you get on a job of any size.
