Pt Chevalier
A new home in Pt Chevalier. Gold and Gold Reserve at Master Builders House of the Year 2011.
Building in Pt Chevalier
A peninsula of bungalows, and salt air on everything you fix to them.
Pt Chevalier is a peninsula, with the Waitemata on one side and Meola Reef on the other, and mostly interwar and post-war bungalows on generous flat sections. The exposure drives cladding, fixings and joinery specification in a way it does not two suburbs inland, and the older streets sit under special character and pre-1944 demolition controls. We built the 2011 house here, a few minutes from the Mount Albert office.

Common questions
Building in Pt Chevalier: what people ask.
Have you built in Pt Chevalier?
Yes. Glenbuild built a new home in Pt Chevalier designed by Bull O'Sullivan Architecture, completed in 2011, and it is part of the firm's 2011 House of the Year record, which included Gold Reserve and Gold.
Does the coastal location affect how a house is built?
Yes. Pt Chevalier sits on a peninsula between the Waitematā and Meola Reef, so exposure to salt air and wind affects cladding choice, fixings and joinery specification. Glenbuild's coastal experience includes a three-storey 219sqm home on Waiheke using dark-stained weatherboards with louvre shutters and battened screens.
Are there character controls in Pt Chevalier?
Over parts of it, yes. The Auckland Unitary Plan applies a Special Character Areas Overlay and pre-1944 demolition controls to sections of Pt Chevalier, particularly the older bungalow streets, so what can change at the street elevation varies by address.
What are Pt Chevalier houses usually like?
Predominantly interwar and post-war bungalows on generous flat sections, many of which have never been reworked internally. That combination is why so much of the work there is opening up the middle of the house rather than extending the footprint.
Can you do a new build on an existing Pt Chevalier section?
Yes, and Glenbuild has. The 2011 Pt Chevalier house was a new home on an established street, designed by Bull O'Sullivan Architecture, and it contributed to that year's House of the Year result.
How far is Pt Chevalier from your office?
A few minutes. The office is at 9/55 Sainsbury Road, Mount Albert, which sits directly inland of Pt Chevalier, so it is one of the closest suburbs Glenbuild works in.
How long has Glenbuild been building near here?
Since 1994, so more than 30 years across the central isthmus. The Pt Chevalier house goes back to 2011, and the record runs through to the 2023 National Supreme Renovation of the Year.
Who prices and runs the job?
Finn Glengarry, the director. He takes the first call, prices the job, and is on site through the build, with a project manager and subtrades who have worked with him for years.
